On Monday 16 May, the Council of State suspended the dissolution of the Antifascist Group of Lyon and Surroundings (GALE) following a summary hearing during which the association’s lawyers challenged the dissolution. The government accuses the association of inciting violence. This dissolution by government decision was made possible by one of the articles of the law of separatism. It is the first extreme left-wing association to fall under the scope of this law on the grounds that it is a group « that provokes violent acts against people or property ».

Associations, collectives, lawyers, academics and members of the civil society, who signed this text, are shocked by the assassination of Samuel Paty, and express their consternation and anger after the public declarations of the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Gérald Darmanin, announcing the will of the government to dissolve several associations, including the Collectif Contre l’Islamophobie en France (CCIF), a structure with which we collaborate
regularly.

« The restrictions of freedoms of association present a risk of impoverishing the public debate and our democracy. By hindering the contradiction on the part of associations, public authorities discourage citizens from getting involved in the civil society and participate to the shrinking of our democratic space » stressed members of the Coalition for Associative Freedoms at the press conference held on October 6th for the release of the new report.
